Some of my fondest memories as a child were helping my father renovate dilapidated old houses. Before wallpaper was stripped or kitchens pulled, we’d walk the rooms, floor by floor, making up stories about the people that lived there, 25, 50, or 100 years ago. Our stories were filled with dark secrets, monsters, and of course, ghosts. So thanks to my dad, I’ve always been filled with a love of mystery and history.

It seems like a natural progression, then, that I studied architecture in one of the coolest cities in the world: New Orleans. A city saturated with tales of voodoo magic and Creole legends; gator-filled swamps and crumbling plantations; creepy cemeteries and secret gardens. While studying the very-concrete logistics of buildings, my imagination flourished in the sights, sounds, and smells of New Orleans all around me.

Years later, between marriage and children, my husband and I went on a dream trip. For fourteen days we trekked the spiritual and stunning Annapurna Sanctuary in Nepal. At the time, I was reading a book about seeing the universal energy surrounding and connecting all living things. It was the perfect adventure to do so! But as much as I squinted and stared, I was never quite sure if I actually saw this energy… or if my imagination was taking over. That didn’t stop me from wondering, what if I could? And what if I could even affect this energy? How incredible would it be to see a glowing light, like a force field, around all people, regardless of race or culture? The seed of my novel, THE TOMBS, was planted there in Nepal.

During many years of working as an architect, I remained faithfully buried in books, and I began to write. In writing, I discovered an unparalleled outlet for my vivid and admittedly weird imagination. And as any architect would, I started with my love of world-building, finding just the right setting, and imagining past the confines of what real blueprints could hold.
